Marching season is coming soon!
Monday morning begins what some would consider the best two weeks of the year! BAND CAMP! Yes, the days can be long, hot, and stressful, but the outcome of those days is an experience like no other. When those weeks are over, you'll be able to look back on them and see all of the great work you got done and all of the fun you had with your friends.
After years of attending band camps as both a student and an instructor, there are a number of things that I have learned. First, SUNSCREEN. No, this is not just because I am bald and burn easy. Help your body out in dealing with the sun! Apply sunscreen early and reapply often. Everytime we get a break, throw some more on. If you burn easy, I recommend the cream rather than the spray. You'll thank me later…that pavement can get HOTTTTTT!!
Secondly, BREAKFAST. Yes, there have been days where even I run late for band camp. No matter how late you woke up EAT SOMETHING!!! Grab a protein bar (or three), drive-thru somewhere, beg mommy to make you something…it doesn't matter. Get food in your body. Sometimes the hours of 8:00-11:30am are the hardest to get through. If you have nothing in your system you'll be a frequent visitor to the sideline or nurse!
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, WATER WATER WATER WATER WATER!!!! We are all guilty at times of not drinking enough water. Maybe you think that you don't need it. Maybe you think it makes you look weak. Nothing makes you look weaker than collapsing in the middle of basics because you've had no water all day. Be sure to bring with you a large jug with your name on it of water for the day. We'll supply refills for you but have something to get you started. Drinking water in the evening is just as important as staying hydrated during the day. Be sure to drink a few glasses of water each evening to replenish what you lost during the day. You'll feel better in the morning and set yourself for success!
Below are a few documents that have been put together as some reminders of what to expect during band camp. Be sure to read over them very carefully. Veterans, you should already know what to expect, BE PREPARED! Rookies, this is all new to you. Don't be afraid to ask questions so that you know what you are getting into.
Good luck to everyone over the next two weeks! I'm looking forward to getting a lot of great work done!
Join us in a fundraising opportunity that can also make your life a little easier. Put down the pots and pans and have a meal (or two) at Max and Erma's in Monroeville on Monday, June 20 ALL DAY. Present the flyer below and a portion of your check goes directly to the Gateway Marching Band!
